THE PROPERITY OF THE SOUL

“Beloved, concerning all things I wish that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers” (3rd John 1:2 Recovery Version). From this verse of scripture, we can see that the prosperity of the soul comes first before prosperity in every other aspect of life. GOD wants HIS children to be prosperous in everything that they do, and HE wants them to live in abundance, but HE is more interested in the prosperity of their soul.

Another term for the prosperity of the soul is ‘the salvation of the soul’, and it entails every decision and corresponding action of obedience to walk according to GOD’S standard of living – GOD’S standard of living is known as righteousness, uprightness, or godliness. The prosperity of the soul is an ongoing process which begins when a person becomes born-again, and thereafter, the LORD begins to lead him/her in the paths of righteousness (Psalm 23:1-3). In other words, GOD begins to work on the believer to make him/her a godly person, because godliness profits in all things (1st Timothy 4:8).

So this is the order of prosperity for every citizen of GOD’S kingdom (i.e. believers), the prosperity of the soul comes first before material or financial prosperity. Matthew 6:31-33 (Recovery Version) reaffirms this, it says, “31. Therefore do not be anxious, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, With what shall we be clothed? 32. For all these things the Gentiles are anxiously seeking. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”.

In the preceding verse (verse 33), notice the words ‘SEEK FIRST’ the kingdom of GOD and ‘HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS’ (i.e. a godly lifestyle), so these verses in scripture (Matthew 6:31-33 Recovery Version) admonishes us to emphasise on living uprightly because it is a major prerequisite for receiving GOD’S blessings and favour for prosperity.
